Mini Christmas Baubles - Free Blackwork Embroidery Patterns

We all love to handmake Christmas items, I know I do!
So I thought to celebrate my Birthday today I would spread the love a bit and release these tiny Blackwork Christmas designs along with instructions on how to make them into your very own Christmas baubles!

Please remember that these patterns are for personal use only. Make them for yourself, for a friend, as a gift, all of that good stuff. As with all of my patterns though you cannot sell any of the embroideries you make with these designs or profit from them in any way. Thank you!

Blackwork embroidery is a counted form of stitching. It is most often done using Aida or evenweave, each intersection on the pattern grid represents a hole in the fabric. You count each of your stitches on to the fabric as you go

See below for a tutorial to explain the basics!

For these patterns you will need:

  • Dark green embroidery floss

  • Light green embroidery floss

  • Yellow embroidery floss

  • Brown embroidery floss

  • Red embroidery floss

  • Blunt needle

  • Aida fabric

  • 2 embroidery hoops

  • Felt (any colour, enough to cover the back of each hoop)

You won’t need much of each colour so this can be a great stash busting project for those odds and ends that need using up!

For the fabric and hoop:

I’ve used 20 count Aida and 3 inch hoops. If you use 18 count Aida you’ll need 4 inch hoops.

If you’re using another count of fabric, simply divide the number of stitches of the design by the count and round up to the nearest whole number, that will give you the size hoop you will need! For example 60stitches/14 count Aida would give you 4.2, so rounding up you’d need a 5 inch hoop to fit the design

The Holly Leaves

There you have it, just one thing left to do…

The video below will show you how to back your hoops with felt to turn them into tree ornaments!
